Arias Fabrega & Fábrega (Arifa) has acted as local counsel to the lead arrangers and bookrunners on a syndicated loan agreement in Panama.

Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank and BNP Paribas Securities were joint lead arrangers and bookrunners of a $160 million senior loan to Banco General.

Adverse global market conditions make this a noteworthy deal, said Ricardo Arango, Arifa's lead partner on the facility.

"What is outstanding about this deal was to be able to raise this kind of money in a syndicated loan for a Latin American bank, given the lack of liquidity in the international markets," said Arango.

Amy Dulin of Hughes Hubbard & Reed's Miami office advised the bank syndicate in the US.

John Howit led Clifford Chance's New York team representing Banco General in the US.
